Wellness Care:

Did you know that the American Animal Hospital Association recommends wellness exams for dogs and cats every six months?  Our pets age much more rapidly than we do, and a lot can change in six months time.  We do a complete physical exam, administer any necessary vaccinations and when indicated, perform diagnostic tests to check for internal parasites, kidney and liver function, and so forth.  The best solution to any medical problem is to catch it and treat it early.  Since our pets can't tell us when or where they are hurting, these exams are critical to early diagnoses and effective treatments.

Veterinary Endoscopy:

An endoscope is a tiny camera that can be inserted orally, nasally or rectally to give us a better picture of what is going on inside your pet.  With it, we can perform extremely accurate diagnostics that would otherwise be impossible.  We can view problem areas, collect biopsy samples and even extract some foreign objects without resorting to surgery!  Exploratory surgeries can be dangerous and recovery can take a long time.  With the endoscope, we avoid the dangers of surgery and your pet will be back on it's feet immediately after this simple outpatient procedure!

Veterinary Ultrasound:

Another amazing diagnostic tool, the ultrasound allows us to quickly and painlessly detect masses and soft tissue problems.  You can think of it as an x-ray for everything other than the skeleton.  Your pet can be awake during an ultrasound procedure, or may be given a mild sedative to help them relax.  The technology we use is actually identical to that used by human obstetricians to view unborn babies in the womb.  With the ultrasound, we are able to diagnose problems like a tumor or cyst without resorting to anesthesia and exploratory surgery.  This is best both for your pet and your pocketbook!

Preventative Treatments:

The best treatment for a problem is no treatment at all.  Preventing a problem before it starts is the best medical care there is!  We carry a full line of parasite preventatives for your pet.  Your pet is at risk of contracting several dangerous and potentially fatal diseases including Heartworm Disease, Lyme Disease, Erlichiosis, Anaplasmosis, Scabies, Leptospirosis and many more.  All of these diseases are transmitted by parasites; fleas, worms, ticks and the like.  The best way to keep your pet healthy is to stock up on monthly preventatives from Rivertown.  If your pet is protected from the parasite, he or she is protected from ever contracting the disease!

Veterinary Acupuncture:

Acupuncture is an ancient practice of stimulating specific points on the body to achieve a desired effect.  The International Veterinary Acupuncture Society trains and certifies licensed Veterinarians to use this modality to treat companion animals.  At Rivertown, acupuncture is used along with all that Western medicine and surgery has to offer.  A physical exam and x-rays are done first to identify the problem area as specifically as possible.  If acupuncture is the best treatment for the animal, treatments will start with the first appointment.  Expect to spend at least an hour during the first appointment, while following treatments may take between 30 and 45 minutes.

Veterinary Chiropractic:

Chiropractic is the application of a directed force on a specific area of the skeleton to re-establish normal joint motion.  This application of force is called an adjustment.  The American Veterinary Chiropractic Association trains and certifies licensed Veterinarians in Veterinary Chiropractic.  As animal skeletons differ greatly from human skeletons, the angles of the adjustments also differ.  At Rivertown Animal Hospital we use Veterinary Chiropractic in conjunction with all the best in Western medicine to develop the optimum treatment plan for the pet as decided by the Pet Owner and the Veterinarian.  A physical exam and x-rays are an important part of a chiropractic exam.

Complete Surgical Care:

Our surgical care is the best anywhere!  We can handle almost any surgery in clinic from traditional treatments like spaying, neutering and de-clawing to complex procedures like salivary gland removal and anterior cruciate ligament repair.  Travel is stressful for sick animals and the less they need to be moved, the better!  We work hard educating ourselves and bringing in specialists in order to provide this advanced level of surgical care right at Rivertown.

Advanced Dental Care:

Proper dental care for your pet is not only good for your pet's breath, it is also good for your pet's health!  Calculus and tartar builds up regularly on your pet's teeth whether you use "dental" treats or not.  Over time pockets of bacteria are created at the gum line and below it.  This bacteria enters the bloodstream from there and spreads throughout your pet's system causing problems with the heart, the lungs, the liver, the kidneys and elsewhere.  I look at it this way: you brush your teeth twice a day and go to the dentist once per year for a thorough cleaning.  How often are your pet's teeth brushed?
